| Sharkey and Susan! |
The woman he was stalking is Susan Holtsclaw. He met and began dating her in 1999 until things started to go downhill. She broke up with him, but he wouldn't leave her alone. He kept stalking and harassing her. Things got so out of hand that she filed a permanent protective order against him in November of 2001.
In the summer of 2003, he violated the protective order by leaving a large yellow envelope of letters in her driveway and left other letters on her car. The two separate actions violated the "no contact" order. According to the protective order, any contact between them must be mediated by Holtsclaw's attorney.
Two days after Sharkey's last violation, he was charged with stalking as a class C felony and two accounts of invasion of privacy as class A misdemeanors. He pleaded guilty on the misdemeanors and the felony was dismissed. He was sentenced to 365 days in jail yet 245 of those days were suspended. In 2004, he once again violated his "no contact" court order and failed to report to his probation department. Sharkey now had two warrants set out against him for escape and stalking.
It wasn't until 2006 when a sheriff's dispatcher in Minnesota discovered Sharkey's outstanding warrants after seeing him on the news for his governor campaign. The dispatcher did a warrant inquiry and soon after, Sharkey was arrested. He was transferred back to Indiana.
One of the most telling parts of Sharkey's court appearance was that he was ordered to seek a mental health evaluation and to be treated for whatever ailed him. He denied any wrongdoing, making the absurd claim that it was Susan Holtsclaw that stalked him and not the other way around. He also claimed he left the state and violated his parole due to an emergency. He claimed that he had the opportunity to run for United States Congress in Tampa, Florida.
In the end, Sharkey served out the remaining 245 days of his original sentence. Sadly, it wouldn't be the last time he had a brush-up against the law.
Below are police reports and an affidavit made available to me by Paul Bibeau, the author of Sunday with Vlad.
